    The most promising emcee to never make it big released his seminal golden age masterpiece "Doe or Die" hot on the heels of his appearance in rhyme partner Nas' classic joint "Life's a Bitch," and in many ways this album can be seen as a perfect companion to "Illmatic," boasting DJ Premier's signature production style and painting a stark picture of the streets in a way that few artists were capable of doing - AZ is essential listening for fans of the Golden Age, and "Doe or Die," in spite of its brevity, is compelling for its sincerity and emotional depth. *****/*****
