Disjointed, odd, and darkly intriguing, Fear of Music is arguably the most underrated album of The Talking Heads first wave of records ( and in many ways, superior to their more-often-cited previous effort, More Songs About Buildings and Food ).

    Just like Lou Reed said about Andy Warhol: I haven't heard ideas like these in such a long long time. "Heaven" is so profound an account of the idea of, well, Heaven, that there were instantly a million little connections made in my brain with so much of the understanding I carry around. When I saw David play it live, he was so coy with his introduction - about floating around on clouds, nothing much else - that I wonder if he even sees any brilliance to it. I did read that he thought the album was funny at the time (albeit inspired by fact), to his embarrassment now. But I just wonder if he wasn't saying what he really thinks because most people might not understand. I know I wish I was stronger about that, no weirder than I am. It's probably like when people would pine to get some sort of response from Bob Dylan, for example, when he simply wasn't interested in relating. After all, beauty IS in the eye of the beholder. In any case, I felt a lot less alone after hearing these guys.
