1995's "The Great Escape" was the 4th album by British alt rock band, Blur & my favorite Blur album by far. It is very much a pop mainstream album relative to other Blur efforts, full of catchy guitar & keyboard riffs, cool lyrics filled with (obscure) pop culture references (especially to Morrissey & Brit Pop royalty, The Smiths). There was media debate which band would inherit the void left vacant by Moz & co & widely speculated things would come down to Blur or Oasis. Oasis had great tunes but "The Great Escape" is nothing to shake a stick at either: vocals, lyrics, & melody, succeed from start to finish as Blur answered the call. To this day, I can listen to Beatle-esque meditation,"The Universal"or the sarcastic Morrissey-esque mock "Charmless Man" (see "This Charming Man") or the edgy, gritty "Stereotypes" without regret. Blur really delivered & became a force to be reckoned with in British pop music largely due to tto the stellar artistic achievements of this album.
