    Jaws is absolutely effective. We needed only the very beginning to experience raw fear. The scene is in effect very much like the suspense a la Hitchcock - you know something terrible is going to happen, you might even know what it is. People swimming, sharks, and the music - so you wait, you wait in suspense until you almost desire for the thing to happen, ...and then it happens. The thing is terrible but you can help but to feel relief because what it is unbearable is the waiting. I Love this. It is like the traditional stories you hear as a child. You know the Woolf is going to reach grandmother's house before the little girl and eat her. So the happy walk of the little girl through the forest is for you a suspended time. You want and don't want the girl to arrive, you wait, you can no longer wait....this suspension of the action must be anchored in a very primary experience because it works all the time.
