    Out go the prog rock leanings and ambitious concepts of the last two albums and in comes a sound not dissimilar in places to R.E.M. on their Murmer and Reckoning albums. The fact that Peter Buck guests on a couple of songs is not coincidence. Everything about the album from the trees of the cover art through the fact many of the tracks were recorded live in the converted farmhouse/barn studio, point to a band getting back to their roots. The overall impression is of a band not trying to hard, enjoying playing together and at the same time producing an album that has become their first number 1 in the US.

    This album is toned down from the band's previous album 'hazards of love' with tight compositions and catchy lyrics (my favorites being rox in the box and all arise). Peter Buck lends a hand with some signature guitar riffs which play off colin's unique vocal range. I really enjoyed it (rating it right behind 'picaresque' in my list of top Decemberists albums)

      Tony Panariello I was a little worried that this album would be too commercial.. it doesn't have the same indie flavor the earlier stuff does.. but I *did* buy the limited edition vinyl because I'm a huge fan!

    Really enjoy the Decemberists. Nice to hear Peter Buck helping out. "This is Why We Fight" is my favorite track on this record.
