This is an extremely underrated album, and was promised to be in the making since 1989 (as Michael Stipe claimed in several interviews). It's full of sonic progression, subversive lyrics, enchanting melodies, and all the fun an R.E.M. album (for it's helplessly depressed listeners). "What's The Frequency Kenneth" was a huge hit that no one seems to remember (just check the MTV Music Video Awards from that year). Grunge's influence is not lost on the band, and truly captures their spirit of the decade for the. "Automatic for the People" maybe their "Rubber Soul," this is their "Revolver".

Despite its presence in every single $1 bin at used record stores the universe over and its less-than-stellar critical rep, I still like it. It's not great and its seriously hit and miss, but it's sloppy and loud in the the right ways.
