Contemplative and despondent, Dylan's creative burst captured here is slightly watered down by Daniel Lanois' production, but the songs have a core strong enough to shine through. This becomes even more apparent when listening to the outtakes/alternates on Tell Tale Signs (Bootleg Series Vol, 8). As always, the lyrics offer enough justification for listening alone, but the music also signals a new direction and the beginning of a revitalized phase. Not to be overlooked.
