    The second album in Gary Numan's "Machine Phase" (which also included "Replicas" and "Telekon") saw the recording artist sublimate the new wave guitars present in his previous three releases in favour of a vastly more synth-driven sound.
    
    The result was a seminal work of electronic music which garnered Numan widespread acclaim and spawned the hit single "Cars", a massive international stage tour, and is still referenced as a touchstone by today's electronic artists.
    
    Fave tracks include: "Metal"; "Complex"; "Films"; "M.E."; "Tracks"; "Cars"; the astonishingly prophetic, "Random" (which, to these ears, heralded the birth of Techno) and the splendidly eerie live version of "Bombers".

    The Pleasure Principle was Gary Numan's first album under his own name. While his band, Tubeway Army's "Replicas" (released the same year, 1979) featured much synth work, The Pleasure Principle is really a synthpop album. Gone are most of the guitars present in his earlier work, although the synths are put through effects pedals much like guitars. Electronic percussion features alongside regular drums. The album, which went to number 1 in the charts in the UK, produced the hit single "Cars"
