        Anyone who recognizes Danny Elfman's name from his scores for Tim Burton's films will have a good idea of what to expect in Serenada Schizophrana, his 2006 release on Sony. The quirky charm and eldritch weirdness that are hallmarks of Elfman's dark soundtracks are in evidence here, as are the self-admitted influences that have shaped much of his music: there are a few echoes of Elfman's heroes, Igor Stravinsky, Béla Bartók, and Sergey Prokofiev, as well as hints of Bernard Herrmann, Kurt Weill, and Duke Ellington, to name a few more of his idols. Yet as powerful as these influences are, they are never slavishly copied or parodied in a disaffected, postmodern way, because Elfman has internalized them and made them an authentic part of his musical language.

        This is a good example for other composers to follow, insofar as Elfman's borrowings are so thoroughly integrated into his own expression that they are never superficial but always subtle. The performance by John Mauceri and a...
