    The quick and quirky music, the discordant tones that somehow seem to follow the convolutions of your brain, is instantly loved or hated - for thisgrand music by Hans Zimmer there is no middle ground. We hear fiery strings and broken pianos. This otherworldly mix of melodies and counter-tones seems suffused with exotic spices of the east, with a circus calliope at the end of time, the incessant ticking of seventy-seven out-of-synch clocks, and the resonate tones of Big Ben across the misty Thames. We hear steam and iron and tide and time and the summoning of the Great Detective from out a lost past. To listen to "Sherlock Holmes" is to travel through space and time; it is not a journey for the faint of heart, but for those who yearn for adventure and romance with all their heart.

    I'm a big fan of Hans Zimmer's "period" or "location" scores, like his score for "Black Hawk Down" or "This Last Samurai." This score, though, feels very different from all the others. There's a playfulness about it, sort of mirroring the banter between Holmes and Watson. It's serious where it needs to be and amusingly different every place else. I just wish they would have included "The Rocky Road to Dublin!"
