I was just a kid when this came out, and that's what the song is about. Billy Corgan had an abusive childhood, and this angst driven song was aimed at his mom and dad for not being the best parents growing up. He could have written a really angry/violent song. Instead he wanted to write a more vulnerable/beautiful song to let them know what they put him through.
There's also a more hardcore version of the song they performed live, and each version was released as a single. The rock ballad was called 'Heart' and the harder version called 'Smile'. Although I had a pretty good childhood, you don't need to have a bad one to appreciate this song. Out of horrible experiences came one of the best songs, from one of the best albums, from one of the best bands to come out of the 20th century.

This is by far my favorite album of all time. Listen to it at least a few times a week. Constantly going back to my SD tab book and re-learning songs or learning parts of songs I used to fudge.. Billy Corgan is a guitar god... His voice on this album is perfect. The fuzzed out guitar sound is amazing...

I'm now convinced this is the most influential album for all "alter-native modern rock" music of today, from the heavy to the soft. I appreciate it more now than 15 years ago when I listened to it regularly. Nothing short of a masterpiece, every track is right.
