    The sophomore effort from “The The’s” Matt Johnson (his debut was the spectacularly experimental “Burning Blue Soul”) is a milestone in early eighties analogue synthpop perfection. To my mind, and Johnson’s later work aside, very few pop albums have even come close to achieving the astonishing heights of melodic genius and frank lyrical introspection which “The The” achieved with this release. If you’ve never heard it, I implore you to invest time and effort into tracking it down and once you’ve bathed in the sublime glory of tracks such as “This Is The Day”, “Uncertain Smile”, “Giant” and “Soul Mining”, feel free to come back and thank me. ;)
