Wynona's Big Brown Beaver gets me every time. Have you HEARD this madman play bass? It's out of this world.

If you asked 100 people to name their favorite bass player, one name that would come up quite often would be Les Claypool of Primus. One of the weirdest bands since Zappa, Primus had their day in the sun with 'Pork Soda', and followed the album up with 1995's 'Tales From the Punchbowl', and album that can best be described in one word, wacky.

The album starts off kind of dull with "Proffesor Nutbutters House of Treats" but quickly picks up the pace with a dark track titled "Mrs. Blaileen", a song about everyone's least favorite teacher, and how one kid deals with her.

The big radio hit "Wynona's Big Brown Beaver" follows. One of the strangest tracks I've ever heard, Wynona, who is obsessed with a beaver pet, sadly finds out in the end that her beloved furry creature is actually a porcupine. I told you Primus were out there.

Other highlights of the album are the funky song you could just see dancing too at you and your cousing wedding "De Anza Jig", the frightening "On the T...

Tales from the punch bowl doesn't fall under "new primus" (anti-pop, brown album sounding primus) or old primus (Sailing the seas of cheese, Pork Soda, Frizzel Fry style Primus). Its truly a transitional step for Primus into their more misunderstood sound which came into full form with the adding of new member Bryan Mantia. this sound would end with the hiatus and return of old Primus member Jay Lane, bringing the band back to what seems reminiscent of Pork Soda.

TPB holds many whacky (Wynona's Big Brown Beaver, Space Farm, De Anza Jig) and/or creepy (Glass Sandwich, Year Of The Parrot, Del Davis Tree Farm) songs. This album is a must have for any Primusser but may be looked over by someone not use to their weird, amazing style.
