The White Album
by The Beatles, 1968
Better known as the "White Album," this was meant to be the record that brought them back to earth after three years of studio experimentation. Instead, it took them all over the place, continuing to burst the envelope of pop music. Lennon and McCartney were still at the height of their powers, with Lennon in particular growing into one of rock's towering figures.

Amazing Beatles album. It's got a little bit of everything. So many styles. Even the much maligned Revolution 9 is really a phenomenal track that broke all sorts of ground.

The Beatles, more commonly referred to as The White Album because of its all white cover, is probably the Beatles album that stays with me more than any ot the band's others. However, I would not quarrel with any of their albums being designated as their best.
In retrospect, my love of this album may come down to its being more of a showcase for the individual talents of McCartney, Lennon, and Harrison, than a typical group album.
Harrison gives us his best in While My Guitar Gently Weeps, featuring a fantastic solo by Eric Clapton. My favorite McCartney composition on the album is Back in the USSR. The track that still gets me going more than any other Beatles tune is the often overlooked or generally not that well thought of, Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey. If that song ever comes on my car radio, it gets cranked to a dangerously high decibel setting.

What more can be said about this one? This is the stuff of pure ambition being backed up by talent and lots of work. Just churning out hits.
