    Abject misery has never sounded so, well, pretty as it does on Elliott Smith's 'XO.' The orchestration ranges from simple to complex, but it all takes a backseat to Smith's gorgeous vocals, especially when he harmonizes. With himself. A sad metaphor for the musician's loneliness, it's most affecting in the hauntingly beautiful last track, "I Didn't Understand." The upbeat sounds of "A Question Mark" and "Sweet Adeline" belie a darkness that coursed through every track on this and his other fine albums.

    If you can get this import , it saves you having to buy Miss Misery separately. Only an issue, of course, if you're a vinyl or CD kind of a cat.
