With 1975's Young Americans, David Bowie chose to head in yet another "new direction," this time extrapolating on the slick disco-soul vibe that characterized 1974's David Live. Surrounded by an army of backup singers (including Luther Vandross) and smooth session players, Bowie actually makes the stylistic affectation work on three of the songs--"Fame," "Young Americans," and "Can You Hear Me."

Bowie's version of "Across the Universe" is one of the best out there. I love Fame, even the 1990 remix, but this original is still amazing. I sometimes forget how great this album is when I'm searching through my collection, but this is very soulful, jazzy and R&B infused. Not very many people realize that Luther Vandross got a young start singing back up on this album and also created the vocal arrangements. There are also a lot of references on this album. "Across the Universe," an amazing song and originally done by the Beatles, is also matched by the line "I heard the news today old boy..." that references a different Beatles song. Bowie also sings about a white guy having soul train and ironically, Bowie was one of the first white singers to perform on the show. Even though this album is 35 years old, it's no where near past its prime or over the hill. It makes me want to turn down the lights, put on some bell bottoms and sequins and groove all night long!!
