She founded the Grammy-award winning band Evanescence with guitarist Ben Moody. She was born to parents John Lee and Sarah Cargil. She has a brother named Robbie and two sisters, Carrie and Lori.

She had a third sister, who died in 1987 from an unidentified illness.
