After leaving Van Halen. Diamond Dave came back strong with a new band featuring super-shredder Steve Vai and bass wizard Billy Sheehan and his own record called "Eat 'Em and Smile". This is hard rocking and tons of fun, but has some minor flaws, mainly Roth's obsession with singing lounge act tunes ("I'm Easy", "That's Life"). Classic party rocker "Yankee Rose", poppy "Goin' Crazy!", pole-swingin' "Bump and Grind", and a killer cover of Sheehan's former group Talas' "Shyboy", plus the cool late-night groove of "Ladies' Night in Buffalo?" are all highlights. Produced by Ted Templeman, who handled all the Roth-era Van Halen albums.

That's Life... boy, he really doesn't believe in reading the lyrics does he? The words are bungled or made up in some parts. Lots of energy, though.

Not as over-the-top as the "Eat 'em and Smile LP", Steve Vai and Billy Sheehan stoke the engine, while Roth takes center stage with his ego-in-overdrive vocals, as evident on the breezy "Just Like Paradise" and "Damn Good". The heavily hyped Warner Brothers' release adds the overlooked "Hina", the comical "Hot Dog and a Shake", "Perfect Timing", "Stand Up", and the towering title track.
