Rainbow is simply amazing. Blackmore is an underrated guitar god and Dio's voice was unbelievable. Talent flowing through classic songs... One of my favorites is " Sixteenth Century Greensleeves".

              "Straight Between the Eyes" LP

"Straight Between the Eyes" comes bookended by two diamond cut descendants of Blackmore's past, "Death Alley Driver" which finds the band trading in the '72 model "Highway Star" for an '82 RPM pusher, and strung-up heatstroker "Eyes of Fire," another epic journey following the footprints laid in the sand by "Stargazer." Two awesome retro-fests, but the rest is all Rainbow MKIII, meaning decidedly commercial and dangerously Americanized, but executed exquisitely with the rays of the Rainbow shining through. The arena rockers are propulsive, "Bring on the Night," "Power," "Rock Fever," and "Miss Mistreated" uncharacteristically party-hearty but successfully slamming the hammer down, while "Tite Squeeze" grinds away with a groove that coulda been cast on "Burn". "Stone Cold" was the single though, it and "Tearin' Out My Heart" unabashed Foreigner clones, and while the rivet-heads must've finally given up with this ballad, it's pure AOR power in the han...

              "Finyl Vinyl" live LP

This mostly live retrospective is not surprisingly heavy on the Joe Lynn Turner era, Ritchie throwing a few bones to former relations Dio (extended versions of "Man on the Silver Mountain" and "Long Live Rock 'n' Roll") and Bonnett ("Since You've Been Gone" from the 1980 Monsters of Rock Festival appearance). The JLT stuff is kept concise and powerful for the most part, stadium rockers like "Spotlight Kid" and "Power" working well on the big stage. Main points of interest here though are the non-LP studio cuts, a cowbell-clunkin' "Down to Earth" outtake, "Bad Girl," and JLT sounding more like Paul Rodgers on the brawny B-side "Jealous Lover" both making this set worthwhile.
