Thelonious Monk

Thelonious Sphere Monk (1917-1982) was a jazz pianist and composer. He was known for his unique improvisational style and many contributions to the standard jazz repertoire, including his classic work 'Round Midnight'. While Monk is often regarded as a founder of bebop, his playing style evolved away from the form.

I read somewhere(Beneath the Underdog I think), that having his NYC Cabaret card taken away for not testifying against Bud Powell during his drug possession charge had a very bad effect on Monk's career. Just as he was starting to get somewhere he couldn't play to his main audience for another 6 years.

Thelonious will always be at the top of my list. He invented his own harmonic language which resonates deeply. Great composer and player. Listen to his recordings, you can hear him sing in the background (just like Glenn Gould!)
