A decades-long portrayal of two BFFs without the candy sugar-coating; sometimes close and supportive, oftentimes toxic and venomous. It's not only women that have these kind of relationships but it's more commonly known to be so. Outstanding performances by both Michelle Williams and Anna Friel.

Just had a small thermonuclear incident go off in my frontal lobes while reading Karl Kerschl & Brian Fletcher's love letter to The Flash in Wednesday Comics. The story encapsulates, concentrates and refines not only the history of The Flash, the very essence of Barry Allen, Gorilla Grodd & Iris West through the lens of 21st century but looking back through the Twentieth but also manages to be a paean to the theme of the book itself. Nostalgia for a lost art form, the adventure strip and the bed sheet-sized Sunday Funnies that riveted the nation from the start of the last century till the mid-to-late Sixties.

Dr, Freeze, Two-Face, The Joker, The Mad Hatter...most of the Batman stories I've read play up their color and eccentricity, not here.

In Gotham Central, Brubaker and Rucka, imagine what it would be like to Serve in a city inhabited by these freaks and whackos and it's not pretty. They're dangerous, unstable. lost in their own little worlds of insanity and the only other person in their sights is The Bat. Everyone else is cannon fodder and chewed scenery when caught between Bats and his foes. On other titles, this is just glossed over, your standard "These are the bad guys and this one here is the good guy." Not so here.

The Dark Knight is fighting crime, sure, but is he really on the side of law & order?

Greg Rucka is firing with all cylinders on this series.

The high concept is Homicide: Life on the Street with just a dash of the Batman. Bats has been with us for a good while now and we've all read our share of his tales. Whether it was during the days of four-colored camp or chewing on the grit & gristle of his grimmer incarnations. I can't recall, however, ever experiencing Gotham as more than a backdrop to The Caped Crusader and his merry menagerie of psychopaths. That is, until now.

Gotham lives and breathes through Rucka's cast of characters. They're on the Job in a city full of colorful and homicidal lunatics and their resident man in tights is driven by his very own special brand of crazy. They get no respect from the civvies and even other branches of the Force think they're riding on the World's Greatest Detective's coattails.

Ol' Pointy Ears appearances are sparse but effective. You get a real feel of what it would be like to live in the same city as the Dark Knight.

The best military courtroom drama ever filmed. The three Australian soldiers aren't what I'd call innocent but the only reason they're in court is for political expedience. Edward Woodward is masterful as the titular main character and Jack Thompson is mesmerizing as the country bumpkin lawyer appointed as their defense. Woodward and Brown deserved better roles than they received in Hollywood following their brilliant performances in this masterpiece.

I teared up while reading this. We've all been the boy, maybe we're small, maybe we're smart, maybe we're plain, maybe we're heavy or maybe we're all these things. What is sure is we're not one of 'them,' the blessed ones...the strong, the beautiful, the popular or even just the one's who are inside a group, a gang, a clique. We've all been that boy, we've lived his life but maybe, maybe we never learned the lessons he was taught. And maybe the reason we never learned that words said are a promise given; that having strength makes one responsible for those weaker than oneself, not simply a means of taking what little they have; that the difference between a fighter and a bully is that the former will always pay the cost to obtain the prize they're striving for; while the latter simply wants to win without paying any price at all. We were never taught these maxims because we never had a man like Pop in our lives. A man willing to pay the cost so that the boy would become a man.

A fine actress and a timeless beauty but that's not all she was. It's not widely known that she, along with George Antheil, were granted a patent for their idea of frequency hooping for secret communications and a method of making torpedoes harder to detect. The practical applications of this idea weren't realized until many decades after the patent expired but you can thank Hedy Lamarr for your Wi-fi connection and your cellphone conversations.
