Dr. Charlotte Staples Lewis is a fictional character on the ABC television series Lost played by Rebecca Mader. Charlotte is introduced in the second episode of season four and is a cultural anthropologist hired on a mission to the island where Oceanic Flight 815 crashed.
On the island she is initially held hostage by one of the plane crash survivors, Locke (Terry O'Quinn), but later switches place with another person on her team. She helps prevent poison gas from being released over the island, and develops a relationship with Daniel Faraday (Jeremy Davies). Later, she and the other inhabitants of the island begin to jump through time, which gives her headaches and nosebleeds, and eventually causes her death.
Charlotte's name is a tribute to C. S. Lewis, the famous author and scholar best known for writing The Chronicles of Narnia series. Originally conceived by the show's creators to be an American, the character's nationality was changed after the producers were impressed with English actress Mader's audition.
Charlotte was supposed to feature in just eight episodes of season four, but after the 2007–2008 Writers Guild of America strike the role continued into season five. Charlotte's introduction, along with the three other new characters from the freighter introduced in season four, was well received. Reaction in later episodes became more mixed, although Mader's acting was praised.
As seen during season five, as a young girl Charlotte lives with her parents, who are members of a scientific community known as the Dharma Initiative, on the island where Oceanic Flight 815 would later crash. In 1977 she is confronted by a man who attempts to persuade her to never return to the Island once she leaves. She is seen evacuating the island during the fifth season finale "The Incident".
Charlotte grows up in Bromsgrove with her parents, unaware of where she was born. She studies at the University of Kent for her undergraduate degree and earns a doctoral degree in cultural anthropology from the University of Oxford, becoming an anthropologist to help find her birthplace. While in Tunisia, she goes to an excavation site in the Sahara Desert, and discovers the remains of a polar bear, which has a collar bearing a Dharma Initiative logo.
Charlotte is selected along with Daniel Faraday, Miles Straume (Ken Leung), and Frank Lapidus (Jeff Fahey), to work on a mission to the island where the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815 had crashed to find Ben Linus (Michael Emerson), as well as to disable a source of poisonous gas. En route, she is forced to eject from a helicopter during a lightning storm.
