I just finished this. My secret: I drain and rinse all the sauce off canned beans and add it to onions sautéed in bacon fat and then seasoned with BBQ sauce, brown sugar and liquid smoke. I seldom bake them anymore. I usually simmer until thickened on the stovetop and nobody knows the difference.
