Basket of Bread (1945) or Basket of Bread-Rather Death Than Shame is a painting by Spanish Surrealist Salvador Dalí. The painting depicts a single piece of bread sitting comfortably in a basket. The basket nears the edge of a table.
Dalí gifted the painting to his wife, Gala. The painting resides in Figueres at the Dalí Theatre-Museum and belongs to the Fundació Gala-Salvador Dalí. The painting was painted and completed in 1945.
The painting is not to be confused with Dalí's 1926 painting The Basket of Bread, created when he was 22 years old. In the earlier version, the bread represents a staple of life. In the 1945 painting, the bread is Eucharistic.

This is so un-Dali like. It looks like an old still life. Not that there's anything wrong with that. I like a well done still life. What is bizarre is that the write-up says the bread is "sitting comfortably". I've never heard bread anthropomorphized like that. How do they know it's comfortable, how do they know it's not sitting edgily?
