Brent Christopher Pennington Oddly, several of my assumptions were true or close to the truth. But the one thing that's significantly left out of my previous guesses was that it is almost always a banking holiday in the countries that observe it. However, it has NOTHING to do with removing Christmas decor or the empty boxes from all the gifts. Frequently gifts are given to the less fortunate and it's traditional to give gifts to various service persons: milkman, postman, servants, and the like.
