Kelly Gaines Usually goes through these cycles. I've seen him pitch live a zillion times. He isn't always so lights out in the beginning of the season. Give home time. He will be amazing again.

Hmmm the info on this page makes Lee 3 years older than he actually is. Guru should change it.

ATLANTA -- Cliff Lee finds himself on the cover of Sports Illustrated this week for the second time this year.

              Eh, no big deal.

"It comes with the success of the team," he said. "It's part of it."

Lee appeared on the cover of SI in April with fellow starters Roy Halladay, Cole Hamels, Roy Oswalt and Joe Blanton. This week, he joins closer Ryan Madson, who posed with Lee on the mound at Citizens Bank Park during the last homestand. Sports Illustrated has a story highlighting aces and closers.

"I was shocked when they asked me," Madson said. "When Chooch [Carlos Ruiz] got the cover by himself this season, I was like, 'Whoa.' I told a lot of my friends about it. I'm just the right guy in the right spot. I can't wait to see it.'"

Lee has been through several of these photo shoots before, so he was a little antsy as soon the shoot began.

              Madson? It was his first.

"I could have stood there forever," he joked.

ATLANTA -- Phillies left-hander Cliff Lee made some history Monday against the Braves in his final regular-season start.

He struck out six and walked none in six innings to finish the season with a career-high 238 strikeouts and 42 walks in 232 2/3 innings.

Elias Sports Bureau found only four pitchers who had a lower walk rate while averaging one or more strikeouts per inning after throwing 150 or more innings: Pedro Martinez (1999, 2000), Curt Schilling ('01, '02), Randy Johnson ('04) and Ben Sheets ('04).

PHILADELPHIA -- Cliff Lee recorded his first 200-strikeout season when he struck out Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman for the first out of the second inning of the Phillies' 9-0 win on Monday.

Lee joins Steve Carlton, Cole Hamels and Chris Short as the only Philadelphia lefties to reach 200 strikeouts in a single season. Twelve pitchers in team history have accomplished the feat.

"I'm trying to throw strikes, trying to work ahead in the count, trying to force them to swing the bat, especially after we get a pretty substantial lead," Lee said. "Don't really want to walk anybody at that point, you just want to throw strikes and make 'em swing the bat, and I was able to do that. [Carlos Ruiz] did an unbelievable job calling the game. I felt like we had them off balance from the start, and he gets a lot of credit for that. I might have shook him off once or twice the whole game. I threw a l...

PHILADELPHIA -- Cliff Lee's stellar August has thrust him into the National League Cy Young Award discussion.

It also earned him his second NL Pitcher of the Month Award.

Lee won all five of his starts and amassed a 0.45 ERA by allowing just two runs over 39 2/3 innings.

He was also honored for his work in June, when he went 5-0 with a 0.21 ERA, making him the first pitcher in Major League history to have two months with five wins, no losses and an ERA under 0.50.

Lee leads the Majors in shutouts this season with six, the most for an NL pitcher since Tim Belcher threw eight in 1989. Lee has the most shutouts for a Phillies pitcher since Steve Carlton recorded six in 1982. He is also the first pitcher since Randy Johnson in 1998 to record six in a season.

PHILADELPHIA -- All those zeroes are no big deal to Cliff Lee.

Lee tossed a five-hitter for his sixth shutout of the season, helping the NL East-leading Philadelphia Phillies beat the second-place Atlanta Braves 9-0 on Monday night.

Lee (16-7) struck out six, walked none and needed only 100 pitches to finish off the Braves after falling one out shy of a shutout in his previous start at Cincinnati. The left-hander has won his last seven starts, five of those scoreless appearances.

He's the first pitcher to record six shutouts in a season since Randy Johnson in 1998.
