I'm glad I was too young to remember this. I wonder what my parents thought?

Today is the 49th Anniversary of the beginning of the Cuban Missile Crisis. JFK kept the missiles from flying by taking a few steps back so that Khrushchev wouldn't feel backed into a corner and have no choice but to send the nukes flying. Khrushchev gladly took advantage of that opportunity. The Joint Chiefs weren't happy about it, but we're all alive now and raising families of our own, so I'm pretty sure that EVERYBODY won. This event brought about the direct telephone line between the U.S. & Russia so that the American president and the leader of the USSR could communicate directly and immediately --A big improvement over 1962. Although the military on both sides were pushing for military engagement during the crisis, both Kennedy and Khruhschev were mortified when they each realized that they were the only two men on the planet who had the power to literally blow up the world. It was scary and a VERY CLOSE CALL... but in the end, both leaders did the right thing.
