It was the last win for Earnhardt before a 59-race drought, which ended with his lone Daytona 500 win in 1998.

His last win came at Talladega in 2000. With just a handful of laps to go, he pitted for tires. Almost everyone else on the lead lap stayed out. He came back on the track somewhere around 20th place. He had a fast car and he was picking off cars left and right, but the laps were winding down. With about 10 to go he was near the top 10. With five to go he was within sight of the leader. He took the white flag and the lead at nearly the same time. Kenny Wallace - who had locked onto his bumper and followed him through the pack - pushed him by and held on to finish second. It may have been the most exciting few laps I'd ever seen. I had no idea at the time that we would never see him win again.
