John O @obituary_mambo I hear that point and it resonates with me to a degree, but I still think the choice to lead with this story and vets to behave in this way in the first place is deeply disturbing and disappointing. No one forced them to serve. War by its very definition is dehumanizing. Focus on support for our vet then- the anti-Americanism is unnecessary and unhelpful at any time, imho, and to lead with that on Memorial Day is deeply insulting and demeaning to the memory of all the soldiers who have died serving out country over the years. Such are the acts of a petulant teenager, not of mature adults trying to accomplish something helpful to anyone. -
obituary mambo While you're correct that the soldiers weren't forced to serve, I think a lot of them feel as if they were lied to about why they were going over and what they would be asked to do once they were there. I also feel strongly that modern warfare is much more dehumanizing than traditional warfare was and that the reason these vets feel they need to take actions such as these is that they aren't getting the support they need. Having factored in exactly how many tours of duty the soldiers of these wars have been asked to do and the alarmingly high suicide rate of returning vets, I'm left to feel that theirs is a voice that deserves to be heard. I'm left to wonder how their desire for peace and their feeling of having been used is in anyway unpatriotic. Are the many American citizens who disagree with our country's occupation of foreign nations and the fact that the government used fear and lies to get us to agree to go to war in the first place unpatriotic as well? -
obituary mambo One last thing, because I'm not sure if it's been overlooked or not. This is not a typical episode of Democracy Now! Ordinarily, Amy Goodman leads with headlines and a short synopsis of the news they contain, then goes to more detailed stories, interviews and debates.

FanFantastic coverage from #noNATO. Here's hoping one of the MSM stations will cover the story as well. Ha! Silly me...

obituary mambo One also has to wonder if this will impact Greece's tourism industry (which they depend on so strongly) in a negative way. But maybe that's just wishful thinking on my part...
