Grant Masaru Imahara (born October 23, 1970 in Los Angeles, California) is a Japanese-American electronics and radio control expert, best known for his work as a Build Team member and co-host on the American television show MythBusters.
Imahara is a graduate of the University of Southern California, with a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering. For a time, he seriously considered switching majors with the intention of becoming a screenwriter, although he decided to stay on the engineering track after assisting Tomlinson Holman, a professor at the USC School of Cinematic Arts and creator of the Lucasfilm THX sound system.
Imahara was hired after graduation as a Licensed Engineer for Lucasfilm's Home THX division; he then moved to ILM where he was involved in films such as The Lost World: Jurassic Park, Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace, Galaxy Quest, AI: Artificial Intelligence, Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, Matrix Reloaded, Matrix Revolutions, Van Helsing, and Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.
Imahara is one of the few people to have ever operated R2D2, and he has also portrayed C3PO in public appearances on behalf of ILM.
He devised the beating arms of the Energizer Bunny, and created Craig Ferguson's robotic sidekick Geoff Peterson after losing a bet to @CraigyFerg.
His robotics love goes back to childhood, and he competed in the Bay Area BattleBots tournament for a number of years. His expertise brought him to the attention of Jamie Hyneman, who would consult with Grant when a project was outside his experience. He was a logical pick to replace host Scottie Chapman on MythBusters when she left to pursue her own business.
A note of trivia - he is exactly one week older than his Build Team co-host Tory Belleci.
