Nothing can chase off hawks faster than a couple of well-aimed (as in close enough to scare, but not in danger of hitting the hawk) bottle rockets. Well... other than a flock of angry crows, anyway. However, there were no crows. Can't have a hawk gliding over our chickens when Ma and I are on the way out.

Many hawks were seen hunting the edges of the forest and fields this past week. The first day in the woods was rainy. I paused at the base of tree and survey the field in front of me. A medium sized Red Tailed Hawk flew up to the tree, perching right above my head. He puffed out his feathers and shook the water from the right down on my hat. After just a few seconds he looked directly into my eyes and we paused in that moment to recognize the breach of personal space. He calmly turned and glided off across the field.

I was walking in the woods and suddenly right above me, maybe 15 feet away, there was a huge hawk sitting on a branch. It looked at me and I at him. Then it just sat there. For about 3 minutes we were still in each others presence. The it quietly flew up through the forrest canopy.
