The hippie subculture was originally a youth movement that began in the United States during the mid-1960s and spread around the world. The word hippie derives from hipster, and was initially used by the mainstream media to describe people who created their own communities, listened to psychedelic rock, embraced the sexual revolution, and used drugs such as cannabis and LSD to explore alternative states of consciousness. As usual, they got it (mostly) wrong.
Humans always create their own communities. Does psychedelic music include songs like "Leavin' On A Jet Plane" or "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes", both of which were written and performed by well-established hippies? And who, in the end, didn't embrace the sexual revolution? As for using drugs to explore alternative states - okay, maybe they got that (partly) right.
Hippies are often confused with 'Flower Children', who copied the look of the hippies but not the mindset. Recent specials on television add to that confusion. Even Wikipedia says that 'flower child' is synonymous with 'hippie'.
Flower children may agree, but hippies will, seeing the similarities, acknowledge the motivational differences and move on.

Oh, there also was a hippie priest messenger near the end of my dream. He was on the roof singing and asking if he could sleep on the roof. The next day he planned to go to Disney Land. Idk.
