"Muffin-top" is a pejorative slang term that originated in Australia in mid-2003, used to describe the phenomenon of overhanging flesh when it spills over the waistline of pants or skirts in a manner that resembles the top of a muffin spilling over its paper casing. It affects both genders, and generally occurs when a person wears low-rise pants that are too small in size; women may also have "breast muffin-top", if their bra is too small in size. Australia's Macquarie Dictionary named "muffin-top" the word of the year in 2006; the American Dialect Society named it one of the "most creative" new terms that same year.

An additional derivation is "Split Top Muffin", used to describe a "muffin-top" with the pants so low as to expose the top of one's butt crack.
