Watching this lift off is so different from watching rockets go up when I was growing up. The main thing is how quiet the broadcast is. No news commentator talking and filling up the silences. The other is seeing guys in t-shirts and blue jeans instead of shirts and ties, although maybe by the time the space shuttle was going up they wore jeans and t-shirts. I didn't watch many of the later shuttle launches.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (AP) — Stargazers of the world are getting a treat this weekend.

On Saturday and again Sunday, Venus, Jupiter and Earth's moon converge for a brilliant night show.

Venus and Jupiter already are lining up in the western sky. In mid-February, the two planets were 20 degrees apart from a viewing perspective. The gap narrows to 10 degrees by month's end.

              Hugh Pickens writes
"An era begins to pass as only about 25 percent of today's American population were at least 5 years old when John Glenn climbed into the Friendship 7 Mercury capsule on Feb. 20, 1962 and became the first American to orbit the earth. This weekend John Glenn joined the proud, surviving veterans of NASA's Project Mercury to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his historic orbital flight as Glenn and Scott Carpenter, the two surviving members of the original astronaut corps, thanked the retired Mercury workers, now in their 70s and 80s, who gathered with their spouses at the Kennedy Space Center to swap stories, pose for pictures and take a bow.
