Great article about Navy Pier in last Sunday's paper: Navy Pier has been an entertainment venue, a university, a naval base, an army base, a convention center, a food storage facility and, well, a pier. It has hosted stars as diverse as the Johnny Hand Band and Kool and the Gang and festivals as big as the Pageant of Progress and ChicagoFest. It has been the home of sporting events, too, namely boxing, tennis, swimming — and in 1921, a race between airplanes and pigeons. (The pigeons won.)

My hubby used to come to Navy Pier with Boy Scouts from Wisconsin for sleepover. Waaaay back when it was actually used by the Navy. Hard to believe how much it has changed over the last 20 years!

Navy Pier has become a Must See for tourists and those visiting family in Chicago. Summer time is the best with lots of outdoor activities (rent a bike, have lunch on a yacht, or get wet on a speed boat) plus indoor shopping. Or take in a movie at the IMAX theater or see the city by riding the Ferris Wheel. Every Wednesday & Saturday night they have a fireworks show...but don't plan on getting home quickly after the fireworks. Grab a drink at one of the many restaurants & watch the crowds thin out. Then catch a cab, trolley or bus. They also have on-site parking - make sure to get partial parking validation from the restaurant. My suggestion is Harry Caray's or Billy Goat Tavern. Every few years the Tall Ships stop for a few weeks. A definite must see for Chicagoans & tourists both. I've done it twice & it's a lot of fun!
