I'll be moving up to Portland this summer. Any tips on how to meet new people before school starts? I think I know, like, three people in the PDX area.
-
Michael Hjorth well, you can always check out www.oregonlive.com, which is full of news and whatnot about the area. -
Jim Tracey Hildreth @hjorth Thank You so much! Can't Thank You enough!! -
Michael Hjorth Not a problem. Normally I'd have more information to give but my mind isn't working today (I'm sick), so give me a bit of time and I'll see what I can come up with. One thing I *do* know is that if you like beer, Oregon is THE place to be. It's often called "the microbrew capitol of the world" because of all of the microbreweries in the state. Deschutes, McMenamin's, Widmer, Rogue, I could go on and on, but I think you get the idea (=

-
Omer Fancy On a barely related note I've been watching Portlandia and while it may not accurately depict Portland (I've never been) it's pretty funny. -
Liz i've heard it's hilarious and spot-on... i need to catch a couple of episodes! -
Omer Fancy Looks like my last comment got cut off but the first season is on Netflix is what I was trying to say.

Jim Tracey Hildreth My in laws are moving 45 minutes outside of Portland and my son wants to move to Portland next year. I have been kicking the idea around because we could use a change. We live in Syracuse New York and would like a change. I here Portland is kind of laid back, I have never been there but looked at a few pics last night and it looks beautiful. If you know any good site about Portland so I can research what it's like there I would appreciate it or any advice.

I'm tired of the Northeast (NJ especially). Considering Portland OR as our next home.

Claudia Cubias It's great that it's a green Eco conscious and progressive city, but yea unless we were hippies that wouldn't be the ONLY reason we'd choose it. :) -
Rebecca Yeah, they're both here. She's a yoga teacher, and was a vegan at the time, so she was totally into that whole scene. -

I visit once a year and love it more and more each time I come up.

Jim Tracey Hildreth @amarlow7 Thanks Andy, I'm not a city person and I would be looking to live outside of the city. I will get back to you were my in laws are moving too. Been on the east coast my whole life and I'm 48 and my last son has 2 years of high school and then we can go anywhere. My wife's family will all be there and sister in Washington. Her dad is 70 and I want to make sure she gets to spend time with her parents. They move 13 hours away from us to Virginia about 8 years ago and since then she has only seen them 5 times. But life is short and I love her family and would like to try the West Coast because there is so much more to do. It would take us about 2 years to get rid of all the stuff that we have collected over the years, also get everything down to our house to get max profit. House sell really quick here so that's not an issue just need some updates. Thanks for writing me back. Have a great day -
Andi Marlow I love towns that are no bigger than a grocery store and a couple necessity shops. so as you can imagine a big city is not my cup of tea, but due to the fact that portland is built basically in the middle of the forest and banks of the Williamette and Columbia River, even in the middle of downtown its not overwhelming at all. I really like Tigard, Sandy, Troutdale and some of the newer area just southwest of Clackamas. Another great town is Oregon City. Very old town. If you're looking for small towns, and get a chance to visit, drive the Pacific Highway 99E look at towns south of portland and Cascade Highway. If i could afford a good size piece of land and could afford to buy farmland it would be off the Cascade Highway. You should also look up St Johns, beautiful little town, right off the columbia north of portland, and not to mention still on the rail and bus routes which means easy to head downtown or the busier part of portland without having to drive. I've been there about 4 ... -
Jim Tracey Hildreth @amarlow7 Thanks so much for all your input I really appreciate it very much.I look forward to my in law moving there and going out there to check it out. Lived on the east coast my whole life and my wife is from California so she would love to go back west with all her family now moving back there,I will let you know when we make it out there.
