Red Hood

Red Hood is the alias used by several fictional characters, usually antagonists for Batman in the DC Universe. The Red Hood first appeared in Detective Comics #168 "The Man Behind the Red Hood" (February 1951). In the original continuity, the man later known as the Joker was a master criminal going by the alias of the Red Hood.

His costume consisted of a large domed red helmet and a red cape. While attempting to rob a chemical plant, his men were dispatched and then he was suddenly cornered on a catwalk by Batman. Left with no alternatives, he dove into a catch basin for the chemicals and swam to freedom, surviving because of a special breathing apparatus built into the helmet.

The toxins in the vat permanently disfigured him, turning his hair green, his skin white and his lips red. Upon discovering this, he went insane, and became the Joker. In Batman: The Killing Joke, Alan Moore wrote an alternate origin of the Joker, and thus the Red Hood; the man who would become the Joker is portrayed as a former chemical engineer, now a struggling stand-up comedian with a pregnant wife.

He is approached by the Red Hood gang who want him to lead them through the chemical plant he once worked at, so they can rob the card factory next door. He accepts, in order to make enough money to start a better life for his family. The gang gives him the costume of the Red Hood, which has been worn by many men before; this way, the gang is able to falsely identify the Red Hood as their leader on all crimes they perform when things go wrong.

The day of the proposed robbery, however, police inform him that his wife died in a freak accident. He attempts to back out of the robbery, but the gang strong-arms him into keeping his commitment. During the robbery, the plant's security men spot the intruders and shoot the other criminals dead.

The engineer tries to flee, but Batman appears and corners him on the plant's catwalk. Terrified, he jumps off the catwalk into the chemical basin to escape. As in the previous origin story, he goes insane after discovering what the chemicals have done to his face, and becomes the Joker.

The Joker himself is reluctant to admit that this iteration of his story is definitive, stating: "Sometimes I remember it one way, sometimes another...if I'm going to have a past, I prefer it to be multiple choice!"

I could see Arsenal & Hood on a team, but the way Kori makes for a lil lust triangle is just icing on the cake. I think they've created some good enemies & look forward to the future of this title. (I had to laugh at Clan Amal though in Crux's origin. It sounds a lot like The Klanimal! lol)

    Cameron Taylor Fricke Alright, sounds splendid then. I will have to grab those next three issues. I was surprised to see that you don't like Nightwing #6, imo it was much better and more necessarily than #5... But to each his own, no?

    Christopher Bohne' Lol! If I 'member right #6 was still like not quite getting a arc started... But yeah, 5 was one of the few New52 issues I've read that I felt "taken". Even all the Batwing issues have felt necessary. Not sure I like the Batwing character, but I sure like the villain, Massacre. As long as he's the arc's villain, I'll keep reading. I like Judd Winick. Supergirl was a real downer, though I wasn't expecting much. I enjoyed the pre-New52 crossovers w/ the Steph Brown Batgirl, so I guess I thought it would be decent. It doesn't get cool 'til #6 & by that time it already came off my pull. Though it looks like she's in the next issue of Superman (looking forward to the new creative team, because currently that book is a B-/C+). I have been tryin' like Hell to get caught up on all my New52s. I have all but a handful of every issue released thus far. I only have the 1st 2 of MrTerrific, Static Shock, & the 2 Legion titles... None of that crap interests me & MT & SS are cancelled as of issue ...

Arsenal has both arms & looks like no drugs/no Cheshire/no dead daughter. Jason wears a Bat symbol, but is some weird sorta Dexter-path or something? Kori is a slutter with no short term memory... does this mean Deathstroke's Titans never existed? Whew... "...to be explained" is right!!

The Jason Todd "Red Hood" is the most current an controversial and ties into the complex history for Batman's Robins. (Came across this while reviewing the Batman villains suggestions). I'l add a Jason Todd link to the List of Batman villains.
