Tulane University is a private, nonsectarian research university located in New Orleans, Louisiana, United States. Founded as a public medical college in 1834, the school grew into a comprehensive university and was eventually privatized under the endowments of Paul Tulane and Josephine Louise Newcomb in the late 19th century. The university offers undergraduate, graduate and professional degrees in over 90 departments across ten schools and colleges, including liberal arts, science and engineering, architecture, business, law, social work, medicine and public health, and tropical medicine.
Tulane is notable for establishing the first public health school in the United States, and the 12th oldest law school in the United States. Tulane is a member of the Association of American Universities as well as the colloquial Southern Ivy League.
