I did enjoy this, but I had a few big problems with it. They're spoilerish, so if you haven't seen the movie I recommend that you don't read this:
1. George has to give up almost all his dreams, and this is presented as okay.
2. Having to give up almost all his dreams makes George a rather bitter, angry person. I felt terrible for him, but it often seemed like he wasn't even trying to focus on the good bits. What's more, he took his frustration out on those closest to him. I have no idea why Mary was even interested in him, given the way he spoke to her during their courtship. I know his poor coping skills are part of the point, but they still bothered me.
It was worth watching once, but I'm not sure I could do so again. - Memory on February 22, 2010 at 12:41pmMemory favorited and commented on Captain Corelli's Mandolin on librarything.com
A truly remarkable book. I know a few readers who've found the unconventional narrative styructure--a contextless hodgepodge of first person, third person, past and present tense--difficult and confusing, but I think it does a wonderful job of drawing the reader in and making her really want to see what's at the heart of the story. It's an emotional and engaging read, and one of my favourites.

One of my top ten favourite books of all time. I love everything about it: the theatre, the vampirism, the Dionysiac imagery, the intense friendship, the historical setting, the characterization... I could go on and on. You don't have to have read INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE to enjoy it, but it's a lot richer if you've got the first book under your belt.

I do have a few reservations about the setting, but they don't really matter in the long run. This book ripped me to shreds. I loved it. My full review: http://xicanti.livejournal.com/102371.html

A brilliant read, and one of my very favourite books. The characterization is amazing, and the plot is wonderfully complex. The subplots have subplots. My full review: http://xicanti.livejournal.com/101667.htmln a

One of my top ten favourite books of all time. The tension between the characters is a thing of beauty, and the prose is just gorgeous. I found myself rereading passages two and three times because I couldn't wait to revisit them. I cannot recommend this series highly enough. My full review: http://xicanti.livejournal.com/101410.html

One of my top ten favourite books of all time. Monette's characters are easily among the best in fantasy, and her worldbuilding is to die for. The book does begin a little slowly, but stick with it. It's absolutely worth it in the end. My full review: http://xicanti.livejournal.com/101232.html

This is my favourite of Kushner's three Riverside books. I love absolutely everything about it. It's a true pleasure to read, and I can't wait to revisit it. My full review: http://xicanti.livejournal.com/92188.html

This is my absolute favourite book of all time. On a scale of one to five, I give it a seven. It is THAT GOOD. Kay excels at taking epic, world-shaking stories and turning them into profoundly personal tales, and TIGANA is his masterpiece.
